For years, the Feb. 19 birthday of the former president, Saparmurat Niyazov, was one of its most important holidays, with flamboyant celebrations of devotion to the man who referred to himself as Turkmenbashi, the Father of All Turkmens. The festivities rivaled similar events exalting Kim Jong-il of North Korea, with military parades, dances and lavish gifts. (For one of his birthdays, Mr. Niyazov’s ministers proclaimed him God’s prophet on Earth.) This year, according to a law passed last week, Flag Day, a holiday typically observed in conjunction with Mr. Niyazov’s birthday, will be celebrated by itself. Punto secondo: riaprono i cinema, l'opera e il circo. Perhaps too late for this year's hot Oscar nominations, but the people of Turkmenistan are to be allowed back into cinemas for the first time in a decade, the country's president said Sunday. Just over a year on from the death of dictator Saparmurat Niyazov -- known for the gold statues of himself he erected as part of an elaborate personality cult in the gas-rich state -- circus shows, opera and even local libraries are also heading back onto the Turkmen cultural agenda. A new action of the head of state aimed at further strengthening of originally inherent principles of humanism and mercy, philanthropy and justice in Turkmen people found a positive response. |
