Ai confini della realtà/2. Ad Ashgabat è tutto pronto per il solenne tributo al presidente immortale (o quasi). Il clima è pesantino ed il paese listato a lutto:

Niyazov’s body will be put on display in a grand palace in the capital Ashgabat for the final farewell ceremony due to be attended by foreign delegations and state officials.

Under a leaden sky, groups of plain clothes police dotted the streets of the lavishly rebuilt capital.
Armed soldiers in camouflage were seen guarding key sites like the telecommunications centre. Green national flags were lowered and few cars and pedestrians were seen on the streets.

Ma dietro le quinte non tutto tace:

The country’s newly set up Security Council, led by Defence Minister Agageldy Mamedgeldyev, holds the main clues to future succession. Set up shortly after Niyazov’s death, it consists of top security officials who were close to Niyazov.

Il giorno dopo cosa succederà? La parola d'ordine è continuità:

The acting president was quick to assert that that Turkmenistan would continue to diligently follow the course set by Niyazov. That includes its commitment to neutrality — a policy plank so fundamental that the country's state Russian-language newspaper is called "Neutral Turkmenistan."

Turkmenistan is an intensely controlled society. Journalists allowed into the country Saturday were under constant official supervision, their hotel reservations arbitrarily changed, their requests for interviews denied.
Soldiers march down streets, police are everywhere, stopping cars, checking IDs, checking permits.

Ma le vette di Turkmenbashi sono irraggiungibili:

But the government minder suggested the tight control could be loosened gradually.
"People can express their ideas with their friends, no problem," the official said. "But not in the streets. Freedoms have to be built slowly, cautiously..."
After more than two decades of education in little more than how to love Niyazov and recite his aphorisms, Turkmen in the capital talked of him lovingly Saturday, often using the title "Turkmenbashi" (father of All Turkmen) that he had conferred on himself.

"He's our president. If I didn't love him, whom would I love?" asked a 34-year-old taxi driver named Aman. "He made us independent. Who knows what will happen now?"

Sempre ci saranno un meccanico bielorusso o un taxista turkmeno...

Intanto la grande partita geo-strategica è cominciata anche se le regole non sono troppo chiare ai contendenti. Niyazov non concepiva il mondo dopo di sé:

The dictator did not believe in the immutability of physical laws. At any rate, he did not think about his successor. He mercilessly put behind bars all those who showed even the smallest desire for power (he also sent people to prison for a thousand other reasons). But some have managed to escape.
In Asian political tradition, his son Murad would become his only more or less legitimate successor in this situation. He has gone into business, has lived with his family in Vienna for the past two years, and has nothing to do with the power struggle at home. If he took part in it, he would inevitably become number one candidate. However, he has no political experience or grip, dictatorial ways, or a team...

The range of political forces admitted to the elections will be decisive in determining Turkmenistan's future. The interim government will have its say on this issue.

La lista delle conquiste del Turkmenistan sotto l'illuminata guida del suo caro leader:

- Rank 155 out of 159 on Transparency International’s “most corrupt countries” list.
- The worst score possible for both political rights and civil liberties on Freedom House’s “freedom in the world” list.
- Over 50% of the population is living in poverty.
- All independent media is banned.
- All political parties except for his are banned.
- Most religions are banned.
- NGOs are effectively banned.
- If you can think of it, it’s probably banned.

Sono sempre i migliori quelli che se ne vanno.
