Tlemonti. Lezioni cinesi.

«I tavoli a due gambe non stanno in piedi. Quindi, il G20 non può essere modificato togliendo lo zero e trasformandolo in un G2. Come minimo serve un G3 o, meglio ancora, lo stesso G20». Poche ore dopo il congedo di Barack Obama dalla Cina, Giulio Tremonti lancia una proposta politica dirompente per la messa a punto del nuovo ordine globale. E per lanciare la provocazione, il ministro dell’Economia italiano sceglie una platea d’eccezione: la Scuola del Partito Comunista Cinese.

Gli allievi della Scuola del Partito Comunista hanno ascoltato con attenzione le tesi vivaci del ministro dell’Economia italiano. Il quale, nonostante le sue passate prese di posizione critiche sulla globalizzazione talvolta anche dal sapore un po’ troppo anticinese (ma di questo, forse, sono responsabili anche certe forzature del mondo politico e della stampa italiana), ieri dalla cattedra del Pcc ha parlato alla nomenklatura usando sapientemente tutti gli ingredienti della dialettica geopolitica che piacciono ai cinesi: il multilateralismo, la democrazia occidentale non esportabile, il principio della non ingerenza, le peculiarità del socialismo cinese, aggiungendo anche un pizzico di terzomondismo che a Pechino non guasta mai.

A student leader of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests has been put on trial by China, one day after Barack Obama departed from Beijing.
Zhou Yongjun, 42, faces a third prison term in China after being handed over to the mainland by the police in Hong Kong.
Mr Zhou, who has lived in the United States since seeking political asylum in 1992, was arrested last September.
His subsequent transfer to the authorities in China, who have accused him of travelling on a false passport, has ignited fury in Hong Kong, which remains regulated by British law.

China's government appears increasingly to be piercing U.S. government and defense industry computer networks to gather useful data for its military, a congressional advisory panel said on Thursday.
"A large body of both circumstantial and forensic evidence strongly indicates Chinese state involvement in such activities," the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission said in its 2009 report to Congress.

"China's peacetime computer exploitation efforts are primarily focused on intelligence collection against U.S. targets and Chinese dissident groups abroad," it said.

Some experts have even speculated about the possibility of a Chinese sponsored coup d'etat should conditions catastrophically deteriorate.
When asked for his view on such speculation, Mr Kim said that he thought it unlikely, but he did suggest that there have been internal uprisings in North Korea.
"I am not an expert in that area - but from the experience of living in North Korea the chances of a military coup with the backing of China or any other forces is very small.
"In the past, I wouldn't say exactly military coups - but there have been similar incidents that have happened before, which have failed."

Verso una moratoria sulla moratoria.

When Todd asked Obama if he was interfering in the trial process by declaring that Mohammed will be executed, Obama, a former constitutional law professor, insisted that he wasn’t trying to dictate the result.
“What I said was, people will not be offended if that's the outcome. I'm not pre-judging, I'm not going to be in that courtroom, that's the job of prosecutors, the judge and the jury,” Obama said. “What I'm absolutely clear about is that I have complete confidence in the American people and our legal traditions and the prosecutors, the tough prosecutors from New York who specialize in terrorism.”

L'uomo che chiede scusa al mondo. Se era sciocco un anno fa negare la rilevanza storica dell'elezione di Obama, sarebbe ancora più miope oggi ignorare la rapidità con la quale l'inquilino della Casa Bianca più amato dagli europei si sta incaricando di demolire a colpi di piccone la percezione che degli Stati Uniti hanno coloro che li ammirano e li difendono. Continuo a pensare che alla fine sia l'America a fare i presidenti e non viceversa, ma l'esperienza di quest'anno vissuto pericolosamente rischia seriamente di mettere in discussione questa premessa. L'immagine che Obama ha dato della città sulla collina nel suo viaggio appena concluso in terra cinese non potrebbe essere più deprimente. Le percezioni sono importanti in politica e quella che è scaturita dal suo incontro con Hu Jintao è la rappresentazione di un'America in procinto di abdicare al suo ruolo di guida delle nazioni democratiche, di prima potenza civile del pianeta, a beneficio dell'idra autocratica cinese. Non una parola a difesa dei propri principi, non una rivendicazione convinta delle proprie conquiste, nemmeno il tempo per un'affermazione della propria storia e della visione del mondo che gli Stati Uniti hanno, fra alti e bassi, sempre incarnato. Si presume - si spera - che Obama abbia mantenuto un profilo così basso per diplomazia, non per convinzione. Ma, anche se così fosse, l'errore non risulterebbe meno grave e meno decisivo in un momento di passaggio come l'attuale. Se tu vai dal capo del Partito Comunista Cinese e ti fai manipolare come un burattino, se vai al cospetto di un gruppo di giovani burocrati della nomenclatura e li scambi per studenti, se visiti la più grande dittatura del pianeta e non sei in grado di spiegare le differenze con la nazione che hai avuto in sorte di governare, allora non puoi - non devi - fare il presidente degli Stati Uniti. Puoi essere un gran conferenziere, un ottimo diplomatico, un buon maggiordomo, ma non il leader del mondo libero. Obama è amato in Europa, nei circoli snob che assegnano i premi, nella sinistra che non crede in se stessa, nei sogni dei liberali confusi, non perché sta cambiando l'America. Obama è osannato perché sta indebolendo l'America, proprio come piace a chi l'America l'ha sempre detestata.

Whether by White House design or Chinese insistence, President Obama has steered clear of public meetings with Chinese liberals, free press advocates and even average Chinese during his first visit to China, showing a deference to the Chinese leadership’s aversions to such interactions that is unusual for a visiting American president.

Human rights is the prime example. In 1998, President Bill Clinton staged a nationally broadcast discussion with the president at the time, Jiang Zemin, about human rights, the Dalai Lama and perhaps China’s most taboo topic, the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. In 2002, President George W. Bush stressed liberty, the rule of law and faith in a speech to university students broadcast across China.

In China, by contrast, Mr. Obama, in nuanced references to human rights, has shied away from citing China’s spotty record, even when offered the chance. Asked Monday in Shanghai to discuss China’s censorship of the Internet, the president replied by talking about America’s robust political debates.

One prominent defense lawyer, Mo Shaoping, said Tuesday that an American official called this month to ask if he would meet with Mr. Obama but never called back. “The U.S. should be the safeguard of universal values,” Mr. Mo said, but Mr. Obama “actually didn’t make it a very high priority.”

2. Similarly I would like to express my grateful thanks, following my letter stipulating my desire to cooperate with the State Peace and Development Council on the lifting of sanctions, for providing me with proper arrangements pertaining to my fact finding on sanctions imposed on Burma.

3. I hope I can cooperate with the State Peace and Development Council in activities that can benefit the State.

4. I want to invite all National League for Democracy Central Executive Committee members to my home to discuss greater efficiency in our party activities. I would further like to pay homage to senior party leaders, Chairman U Aung Shwe, Secretary U Lwin and CEC member U Lun Tin, at their respective homes as they are confined to their homes due to failing health. As such, I would like to ask permission for the necessary arrangements to be made for allowing the convening of a CEC meeting at my home to be attended by all CEC members.

5. After meeting with all CEC members, I would like to say that I want to cooperate more with the State Peace and Development Council in activities beneficial to the State.

Ma c’è qualcosa di più feroce di un’esclu­sione dovuta esclusivamente per cause, per così dire, fisiche? Mica quelle ragazze erano state selezionate per un concorso di bellezza, o per il casting di una trasmissio­ne televisiva, o per allietare un evento mondano. No, erano state scelte per ascol­tare la parola di Gheddafi sull’Islam, sul crocifisso, sulle profezie, sulla virtù, sulla conversione. E allora che c’entrano la ta­glia 42 e il tacco di almeno sette centime­tri? Ma se non c’entrano, come mai si è im­provvisamente inaridito il fiume di discor­si e petizioni che in questi mesi si è impo­sto sulla degradazione del corpo delle don­ne, sulle ragazze ridotte e umiliate a stru­mento per allietare le serate dei sultani, al­l’imposizione di un canone convenzionale di bellezza che mortifica l’intelligenza del­le donne, che trasforma le ragazze in oche e veline sottomesse ai capricci dei potenti? Una nuova ideologia europea.

The truth is—as the two exemples (that of Buttiglione and of the ruling by the European Court of Human Rights against crucifixes) demonstrate—that there is a wall that, as I said at the beginning of this post, hasn’t fallen yet. This is a living wall, made up of thoughts and convictions, and its name is “Christophobia,” a term coined by international legal scholar (and an observant Jew) J.H.H. Weiler to describe a phenomenon clearly prevalent in many parts of Europe: not merely a fear of Christianity and Christians, but the root of the refusal to acknowledge what Weiler himself regarded as obvious: that Christian ideas and values were one of the principal sources of European civilization and of Europe’s contemporary commitment to human rights and democracy. “Christophobia” is deeply rooted in European laïcité, as distinct from American secularism: it is not simply a “I don’t happen to believe in God.” It is, in Weiler’s own words, “a kind of faith in itself. It is a positive hostility to religion, which in Europe means Christianity.”
